The Terrible Truth of Faerywood Falls Read online

I smiled. “That’s a good way to look at it,” I said.

My eyes widened as glittering green sparkles reflected against the water of the lake.

“Are those…fireflies?” I asked. “So late in the year?”

They were. They blinked on and off, their soft green glow floating toward us.

It was like they were trying to communicate with me.

“This whole thing does make me wonder…Cain mentioned there were ‘lake folk’ that I should be careful not to anger. And then there were those kids books that Abe was telling me about. Is it possible that those sorts of people actually exist?”

Of course it is, Athena said. So many people you’ve run into have strange gifts. How hard is it to believe that those who can breathe underwater exist?

A chill ran down my spine. “It’s crazy, though, isn’t it? There’s still so much about Faerywood Falls and its inhabitants that I don’t understand. I think I’ll always be searching, always trying to find the truth here.”

I’m sure you’re right, Athena said, her tail swishing, her nose sniffing at the cold, night air.

I sighed. “Becca is gone, but who knows if there are others like her out in the town? For some reason, Faerywood Falls continues to attract dangerous people with dangerous motives. It makes me wonder what will happen next…”

How do you know that there will be another death? Athena asked. That’s assuming a lot, isn’t it?

I shook my head. “Not when it seems to keep happening, right?”

I stared out into the night, but felt no fear. It was hard to, when the world around us seemed so peaceful.

“And that monster…” I said, my eyes scanning the tree line nearby. “That monster bears watching out for…”

Dante will get it in the end…Athena said, yawning and stretching out beside me on the step. I think we can trust him with that.

“You think so?…” I asked. Trusting Dante, huh? I still wasn’t completely sure about that. I still had so many questions. Would he stand with me in the end…even if he knew who, and what I was? “I hope you’re right.”
